I was so excited to get my hands on this new book, and still just as excited now that I have read it! Runes for the Green Witch combines two topics that are very near and dear to my heart, plants and runes! It is awesome to have something written that combines these areas, as there is so much information out there on runes and plant lore, but this book brings them together! Nicolette is a witch, rune worker and herbalist based out of Pittsburg, PA. She is owner of Handfuls of Dust Apothecary @handfulsofdust. Nicolette brings her experience as a rune worker and herbalist to us in an effortless manner. Whether you are interested in runes, herbs or both this book will add depth and nuance.
The book is divided into three main sections, just like the runes of the Elder Futhark which are divided into three aettir (groups of eight). Each governing a different aspect of the human experience, the runes have both a phonetic, spiritual and symbolic meaning. There is a section for each rune, its divinatory meanings and ways of connecting to the energy that each rune represents. There are also rituals and exercises that go with the theme of each one. The herbs are all paired with runes for which they share an affinity in energetics, symbolism, and ritual practice. Combining plant and rune for various ritual intentions to increase their power and effectiveness.
The herbal information is derived from a variety of sources, and includes both spiritual and medicinal information. By pairing herbs with each rune section, Nicolette not only provides a rich trove of magickal plant lore, but also provides a useful mnemonic device for familiarizing oneself with the meaning of each rune. Through the language of plants we are able to integrate complex ideas into these archaic symbolic representations. One thing that I have noticed in my own work with the runes is that they can be extremely accurate but also incredibly concise with their messages. The additional correspondences provided in this book give the reader further insight through cross-association of runic lore with existing correspondences including astrology and tarot.
This book is a great resource if you are beginning to work with the runes by providing plant allies that can assist in this process. The reader will be able to apply this information to their divinatory practice as well as incorporating the runes and their corresponding herbs into ritual practice. Nicollette even includes many poisonous plants and their correspondences, in addition herbs that have poisonous qualities but are not the infamous plants of the poison path. There is also an amazing forumulary at the end that lists recipes for a variety of formulas for spell work listed under each runic category. Runes for the Green Witch is comprehensive but easy to digest, and will leave the reader with the confidence that they can incorporate the runes into their magickal practice in infinite ways.
